I sent Brad from Pen Addict a frantic OH MY GOD I DONT EVEN OWN ANY INK AND DONT KNOW WHAT TO GET text that night, and he was patient and kind and resisted teasing me for my YEARS of disparaging fountain pens. This doesn't surprise me in the least. Looking at the underside of the nib, we can see just a hint of its rim, as well as the tipping size imprinted on the feed. parker shell removal each In my two weeks of writing with this pen I never had an issue with the cap falling off the back, but I never got over the feeling that it might. I am not sure if I can use the pen unless I can figure out a way to make it write a bit 'wet' and stop skipping. So I just tried not to think about it so that I could avoid losing sleep over a writing instrument (theres precedent). However, I checked my other model 601, (a demonstrator version and so I did not even need to remove the section). I will say that the blue cartridge that came with mine was kind of, well, garbage. A tubular nib, sourcing Lucite for the barrel, and a proper Aerometric/Vacumatic filler are all too expensive to "bring back". What I do find is that the medium nib, while smooth, has no personality. My nib is notorious for hard starts. Avoid the new 51. The flushing of the feed with fresh ink regularly on refilling, serves to keep things running. I made a lot of mistakes right away, but that could happen to anybody (right?). 4. I feared that I had damaged it, perhaps by squeezing too hard to pull out the nib. The pen usage has been good but I am nervous to bring it outside for EDC because I'm worried about a tiny leak or if the ink runs out with no idea of how low it is. If I never knew that the original 51 had a clutch ring for a slip cap in this spot I might find it a bit odd to have a secret trim ring under the cap, but its a nice minimal look, it integrates seamlessly into the barrel threads, and the cap threads themselves catch and hold securely. It does not seem to lose any ink to evaporation. Then, keeping the barrel with the 12 cclock position at the top, remove the shell again and then push the ink collector back into the barrel, with the nib in line with your 12 oclock position. And I love it. I really like a nice aerometric system, and I love the early Parker converters that were basically removable aero-filling systems. But lets start first by examining what you get when your pen arrives. And yet, it isnt bad, and I will certainly use it as a practical workhorse pen, without the need to baby it like a vintage. Since buying this pen two years ago, it has stayed inked in my pen cup. I was never able to get my 51 to write quite right. I put a new piston converter in mine first, and now Im kicking myself for not using one of the old heavy beauties from the 60s or 70s. In order to repair the skip problem of my NG51,I sent it to one of my friend.He disassembled it and gave me these picturesshows the inside of NG51. This isnt a pen blog, though, so I officially dont know what Im talking about. I consider myself as a pretty lenient person, but this is simply unacceptable. Here are the steps to disassemble and reassemble this pen:-. I will not go over why I do not like any of the redesigns, there has been plenty of talk about it by other people; I will also not go over aesthetics, as everyone has subjective opinions and cannot really be analyzed objectively; Here are some non-design & functionality issues about the pen I found after 2 days of use: The resin is of very low quality and extremely easy to scratch; after 2 days of home use, the resin has already accumulated 3 visible scratches; in comparison, my 743 which has been with me for 2 years and has been used outside have only 1 very minor scratch mark under a flashlight; Capping the pen scratches my hold section; the edge of the metal cap is so unpolished that it risks scratching the hold section every time you cap it; Uncapped, the hooded nib dries in around 5 minutes, which defeats the purpose of a hooded nib in the first place; I have expose-nibbed (p743) pens that can last 8-10 minutes with the same ink; Capped, the nib dries overnight (10hrs) and only starts after at least 5 strokes; The hood section is too long and too angled such that you cannot see the nib when writing; see photo below; Writing with this requires constant guessing of where the sweatspot is; I personally cannot accept this; to salt the wound, old parkers do not have this issue at all; The nib is basically a Parker Jotter nib and looks nothing like a "standard hooded nib"; The parker jotter is a 19$ pen; need I say more? And that is saying a lot! By My academic cousin, an historian of the British press and at least formerly one of the editors of the Dictionary of National Biography, now writes to me that at our age there are no more prizes or promotions to be won, except book prizes, ha ha, and so we really are writing mostly for ourselves.

I mentioned before that I wanted to review this pen on its own merit, not just in comparison to the original Parker 51, but I do think its worth looking at how it stacks up to some older Parker models physically. As a comparison, the Duofold I bought was used, had slightly cracked lip, and the "old" Domino color edition that is more than a decade old. I take your point about pens not needing much by way of cleaning. Is the feed just friction fit into the section? The nib and feed are still inside the ink collector, with a clear plastic breather tube at the back. The art deco vented pen cap pays homage to the early vacumatic version. In the case of this Wing Sung 601, it is not an expensive pen and I imagine that most owners would not disassemble it. So I washed the pen out and put J. Herbin Perle Noire in the converter. I find no problem with the screw-on cap. Hopefully, the lip will now line up over the hooded nib. A tubular nib, sourcing Lucite for the barrel, and a proper Aerometric/Vacumatic filler are all too expensive to "bring back". What I do find is that the medium nib, while smooth, has no personality. My nib is notorious for hard starts. Avoid the new 51. The flushing of the feed with fresh ink regularly on refilling, serves to keep things running. I made a lot of mistakes right away, but that could happen to anybody (right?). 4. I feared that I had damaged it, perhaps by squeezing too hard to pull out the nib. Yesterday, on finding it almost empty I decided to give it a clean. Note: to reduce risk of damage, this stage could be skipped and the assembled nib, feed and ink collector instead be placed in water to soak. but those brands also offer their ink cartridges in more colors than just black and blue. I am a great fan of the vintage ones, and my hopes were not very high, but I said, what the heck.

What matters about a nib isnt whether a cheaper pen also has that same nib, its how the nib performs, which well get to. User-grade aerometric '51's with a gold nib can be found for less than the price of a steel nib 2021 '51'. Actually I found it very satisfying. The pen usage has been good but I am nervous to bring it outside for EDC because I'm worried about a tiny leak or if the ink runs out with no idea of how low it is. If I never knew that the original 51 had a clutch ring for a slip cap in this spot I might find it a bit odd to have a secret trim ring under the cap, but its a nice minimal look, it integrates seamlessly into the barrel threads, and the cap threads themselves catch and hold securely. It does not seem to lose any ink to evaporation. Then, keeping the barrel with the 12 cclock position at the top, remove the shell again and then push the ink collector back into the barrel, with the nib in line with your 12 oclock position. And I love it. It is probably fair to say that when you own one fountain pen and use it and refill it regularly, with the same ink, it will largely take care of itself. parker nib italic broad n401 oblique The nib on the new 51 feels like this sort of nib, married to the sharper nib from the older 51, nibs which I have always found to have a smaller sweet spot than a regular nib. The Wing Sung 601 is a Chinese homage to the classic but long- discontinued Parker 51 vacumatic but with a few differences such as a stainless steel nib, ink windows and a price tag (in this instance) of around 7.50. My Urban and my Jotters are very smooth writers, with very stiff nibs. Next time! The nib is different, the filling system is different, the capping mechanism is different, etc. Instead, they took a nib/feed/cap design from the Jotter, pumped out a resin "hood" that was too wide to actually cover the nib, and fell back to the C/C mechanism while not even including a converter on the standard version. I didnt buy this as an heirloom object. My pen did not come with the necessary wrench to unscrew the plunger, but I received one later with the Wing Sung 601A and it also fits the 601. As it had been so long since since the last clean, I had forgotten the detail of how to do it, although I had a recollection of there being a few points to bear in mind. It didnt engage right away and felt off. It was so dry that the pen was not very smooth, and I was worried that I got a lemon of a pen. This pen is not a rebranded Jinhao, it is manufactured by Parker in France. Is it going to last like Lucite? Alright, all of that is well and good, but how does the nib write? I read all the negative reviews and thought they are too nitpicky; at least I am glad I didn't buy the deluxe version (250$ for this quality of resin? I really like a nice aerometric system, and I love the early Parker converters that were basically removable aero-filling systems. But lets start first by examining what you get when your pen arrives. And yet, it isnt bad, and I will certainly use it as a practical workhorse pen, without the need to baby it like a vintage. It's easy! This new Parker 51 seemed to only capitalize on the legendary status of its predecessor. Now, for the other end: unscrew the blind cap. 6. I was wary of cleaning the sealed hooded section to I loaded up the pen with some nice and safe Waterman Serenity Blue, and I found the medium nib to write smoothly with a very even flow. Since buying this pen two years ago, it has stayed inked in my pen cup. I was never able to get my 51 to write quite right. On the other hand, I am more and more intrigued with the legends surrounding Parker 51 of why it is one of the quintessential fountain pens of the old (but I'm pretty sure the term "timeless" would be a more accurate for that particular pen). I put a new piston converter in mine first, and now Im kicking myself for not using one of the old heavy beauties from the 60s or 70s. In order to repair the skip problem of my NG51,I sent it to one of my friend.He disassembled it and gave me these picturesshows the inside of NG51. This isnt a pen blog, though, so I officially dont know what Im talking about. I consider myself as a pretty lenient person, but this is simply unacceptable. Here are the steps to disassemble and reassemble this pen:-. I will not go over why I do not like any of the redesigns, there has been plenty of talk about it by other people; I will also not go over aesthetics, as everyone has subjective opinions and cannot really be analyzed objectively; Here are some non-design & functionality issues about the pen I found after 2 days of use: The resin is of very low quality and extremely easy to scratch; after 2 days of home use, the resin has already accumulated 3 visible scratches; in comparison, my 743 which has been with me for 2 years and has been used outside have only 1 very minor scratch mark under a flashlight; Capping the pen scratches my hold section; the edge of the metal cap is so unpolished that it risks scratching the hold section every time you cap it; Uncapped, the hooded nib dries in around 5 minutes, which defeats the purpose of a hooded nib in the first place; I have expose-nibbed (p743) pens that can last 8-10 minutes with the same ink; Capped, the nib dries overnight (10hrs) and only starts after at least 5 strokes; The hood section is too long and too angled such that you cannot see the nib when writing; see photo below; Writing with this requires constant guessing of where the sweatspot is; I personally cannot accept this; to salt the wound, old parkers do not have this issue at all; The nib is basically a Parker Jotter nib and looks nothing like a "standard hooded nib"; The parker jotter is a 19$ pen; need I say more? And that is saying a lot!
