While it does feel stable underfoot, there isnt any support to prevent the foot from collapsing inwards, and Id probably opt for the Nike ZoomX Invincible Run, which is sold as more of a stability shoe.
Fit-wise, the shoe runs a little small and definitely feels shorter in the foot compared to other brands.

A heel striker is going to create a lower relative drop when they land on their heel due to the compression there relative to the forefoot. Perhaps one of the most important design elements when it comes to the Cloudmonster is the rocker geometry of the shoe something that has become more popular in running shoe designs of late. This could easily be a good daily trainer/long-run shoe. The sock should also reduce any chaffing as there are fewer seams inside. There is also the Skechers MaxRoad 5 for those who want a max-stacked shoe that is lighter and faster to use across a range of types of run. With good sidewall integration and geometry, the On Cloudmonster is a highly cushioned rockered shoe that provides a very fun and versatile ride for the category. You dont sink into the foam and then spring forwards, and although the Speedboard in the midsole does help move you through your stride efficiently, its not noticeable in the same way as the plate on a shoe like the Skechers MaxRoad 5. The coated toe cap will stop any front-on water splashes from entering the shoe and also prevent any cold wind from hitting your toes. and what types of surfaces? I think this may be due to the platform itself and upper integration but there is quite a bit of volume throughout the length of the shoe vertically as well. This, in my opinion, is a great move by On as this will also make the responsiveness of the midsole cushioning last longer. For training purposes, the shoe certainly checks its boxes but I do believe a weight reduction would work in its favor.

The Cloud cushioning units are significantly bigger than any other On shoe I have tried. As the shoe breaks in, the heel pods compress more for me, making the shoe feel more like a 0-4mm drop shoe depending on how hard I hit the ground as a heel striker. The ride reminds me to something like the HOKA Bondi but with some deeper flex grooves and a little more responsiveness.

I covered 52km in the shoe ahead of its review embargo date, with the longest run being around 14km. This only addresses movement in the sagittal plane (front to back) and not the frontal plane (side to side) as people will compress different sides of the shoe depending on their own unique movement path.
It does not have traditional methods of stability, but there are a few elements traditional to maximalist shoes that help somewhat. The shoe also has great sidewall integration from the midsole that almost serves as a guiderail both medially and laterally when the shoe is laced down. There is padding around the collar but the tongue is thin and, in general, the upper is less cushioned than youll find on other max-stacked shoes. The On Cloudmonster is one of their first shoes that deviates from this stereotype. The shoe is quite large and does not respond well to pace increases. I used the On Cloudmonster for a couple of progression runs, running the final few kilometres at a steady or fast pace, but mostly I stuck to easy runs. Pretty promising. The upper fits well throughout and does not provide any fit or instability concerns. The appear to be the newest On shoe (similar to the Cloudmonster) but there is barely any information or reviews on this shoe. There appears to still be plenty of midsole material before I puncture the cloud in that area, but would put the durability as average for a training shoe unless you are lighter on your feet than myself. Currently available via On Running's website and stores for $169.99, the Cloudmonster is On's most cushioned shoe ever. I like shoes with a rocker, but the more natural feel of the Cloudmonster will appeal to others, especially in the max-cushioned category where there arent many shoes like it. The upper is pretty typical of On running shoes, with around 80% of the Polyester coming from recycled materials. The On Cloud shoes come in many different colors for the mens and for the womens too, which is fantastic so be sure to check them all out. This is exactly why we try to describe if the drop feels the same as it is listed because the number provided is static and the actual experienced drop can be far different.
(Very fun and responsive ride for the maximalist category. At the time of launch, the shoe comes in a navy colorway in the mens version of the shoe, and a lilac colorway for the womens model.
