The boardwalk through Sian Kaan was great, saw some interesting fauna ( flora was also exciting for Europeans, but since it wasnt our first selva experience, were not impressed). On Monday 23 December we had no problem getting two boats for our group of 10 at about 9:am there were 5 at the dock when we arrived, but it seems things tightened up shortly thereafter. Everything was exactly how you described and so much easier to know what to expect with our 6 year old. Unfortunately, Im not familiar with the logistics involved with getting a fishing license. Guides are relaxed and seem very trustworthy wrt to leaving your bags in the boat, so no worries about that. There have been regular buses plying that route for some time.
