For a pair of 15x70s, my gut feeling is most tripods rated for 10 pounds would not be up to the task.. Finally, in extreme conditions, I have rolled larger rocks against the tripod legs and this worked brillantly. Perhaps theyre too light.

the deal on the Red Snapper rs283 + free head will be fine for what I need (49 from Red Snapper themselves). Their rather flimsy build quality at least when compared to the step-up SkyMaster Pro binoculars elsewhere in Celestrons stable may be a long-term worry, though during our review all we got was dependably sharp and impressive views of open clusters, starfields and galaxies. I have placed my Binos on a Cullmann tripod and they are moved using a Manfrotto grip. The adapter does suck though. What is the best way to mount this thing? Pointed north we also managed to glimpse the M81 and M82 galaxies, which are just out of range of smaller binoculars. Does anyone have good recommendations for a sturdy tripod for these? I bought myself Celestron SkyMaster Giant 15x70 Binoculars and I am currently using a basic tripod that i normally would use for my DSLR but its super wobbly when i look through them. Almost insanely affordable, we can see these large binoculars being purchased for occasional use, perhaps spending most of the year in a cupboard but being brought outside for special astronomical occasions. My older ball head didn't have a friction adjustment so it was harder to use it. So I got a "fine tuning head" for it (for sale section 18) and it's now brilliant. it's really quite excellent, very stable and flexible (in a good way). The important thing is to get a comfortable viewing height without straining your neck. Viewing through larger binos at higher angles is hard enough on the neck without having to deal with a tripod that's too short.
For heads, the 3063 or 3047s can work but require different mounting concepts. Although this is the first tripod I have had, so I can't compare it to others, the Horizon seems to be very robustly constructed and has lots of adjustment dials / handles. Also, if there's a 2 in the second position, 3246 for example, the tripod will be black. How about the Orion Paragon heavy duty tripod? I use a s/h camera tripod with mine (23 from Jessops sale) which on it's own is useless - vibrations, awkward to lock/unlock/move etc. if so, you may get a better clearance between the handle and the top of the legs. As a small point, I would extend the lower legs before raising the centre column if possible. The binos sit in a quick release head which supports a flash bar to hold the William Optics RDF.

Very nice fluid head, the spread of the tripod legs can be adjusted, and it has a great range in size. The field of view is mostly sharp throughout with only a tiny drop-off towards the edge.
The Manfrotto 190 tripod looks very nice, but is a bit expensive for what I need (about 200ish on Amazon at the moment?). Blimey,those Triton Ballhead Action Grips look the business, so i've just sent for one.. totally recommended! It also has a little spirit level built into it, so you can adjust your legs accordingly to get the tripod level, which is quite useful. Had some fantastic views of M31 / Jupiter / Pleiades / Double Cluster through the Celestrons, no way could I have hand held them steady enough for this quality of viewing without the Triton / RedSnapper combo! I have really enjoyed observing the moon and jupiter over the past week with them. they are really robust and hold the bins no problem at all. October 30, 2010 in Discussions - Mounts. I keep my eye on the local Craigslist and regularly search for Bogen and tripod. So,even though they may be labelled as a 'camera' tripod they can also easily accomodate binocs? I ended up getting the Barska solid metal binocular tripod adapter off Amazon and an Orion Paragon HD-F2 tripod off Amazon. We like the fact that they come with a tripod bracket for mounting on a tripod, but they are just about light enough to hold steady for occasional use. It's 78" tall and better for those 6' or taller. It is very stable.

I agree mate,the clouds lately have been terrible and persistent.The rain has been heavy and practically non-stop in Sheffield over the last 2 or 3 days too.I dont mind the rain,in fact I quite enjoy it,but the WIND!,arghh,the wind these last few days would blow over all but the strongest mounts! Sometimes you have to raise the centre column to avoid the handle attached to the head hitting the legs, so is it possible to put the handle into different positions on the head? In windy conditions whilst birdwatching I usually hang a bag of small peebles/stones to the centre column, this is very effective.

For a pair of 15x70s, my gut feeling is most tripods rated for 10 pounds would not be up to the task.. Finally, in extreme conditions, I have rolled larger rocks against the tripod legs and this worked brillantly. Perhaps theyre too light.

the deal on the Red Snapper rs283 + free head will be fine for what I need (49 from Red Snapper themselves). Their rather flimsy build quality at least when compared to the step-up SkyMaster Pro binoculars elsewhere in Celestrons stable may be a long-term worry, though during our review all we got was dependably sharp and impressive views of open clusters, starfields and galaxies. What is the best way to mount this thing? Pointed north we also managed to glimpse the M81 and M82 galaxies, which are just out of range of smaller binoculars. Almost insanely affordable, we can see these large binoculars being purchased for occasional use, perhaps spending most of the year in a cupboard but being brought outside for special astronomical occasions. My older ball head didn't have a friction adjustment so it was harder to use it. So I got a "fine tuning head" for it (for sale section 18) and it's now brilliant. it's really quite excellent, very stable and flexible (in a good way). The important thing is to get a comfortable viewing height without straining your neck. Viewing through larger binos at higher angles is hard enough on the neck without having to deal with a tripod that's too short.
For heads, the 3063 or 3047s can work but require different mounting concepts. Although this is the first tripod I have had, so I can't compare it to others, the Horizon seems to be very robustly constructed and has lots of adjustment dials / handles. Also, if there's a 2 in the second position, 3246 for example, the tripod will be black. How about the Orion Paragon heavy duty tripod? As a small point, I would extend the lower legs before raising the centre column if possible. The binos sit in a quick release head which supports a flash bar to hold the William Optics RDF.

Very nice fluid head, the spread of the tripod legs can be adjusted, and it has a great range in size. The field of view is mostly sharp throughout with only a tiny drop-off towards the edge.
The Manfrotto 190 tripod looks very nice, but is a bit expensive for what I need (about 200ish on Amazon at the moment?). Blimey,those Triton Ballhead Action Grips look the business, so i've just sent for one.. totally recommended! It also has a little spirit level built into it, so you can adjust your legs accordingly to get the tripod level, which is quite useful. Had some fantastic views of M31 / Jupiter / Pleiades / Double Cluster through the Celestrons, no way could I have hand held them steady enough for this quality of viewing without the Triton / RedSnapper combo! I have really enjoyed observing the moon and jupiter over the past week with them. they are really robust and hold the bins no problem at all. October 30, 2010 in Discussions - Mounts. So,even though they may be labelled as a 'camera' tripod they can also easily accomodate binocs? I ended up getting the Barska solid metal binocular tripod adapter off Amazon and an Orion Paragon HD-F2 tripod off Amazon. We like the fact that they come with a tripod bracket for mounting on a tripod, but they are just about light enough to hold steady for occasional use. It's 78" tall and better for those 6' or taller. It is very stable.
